Film Review: The Blair Witch

Well they really went back to the well on this one.  After a bunch of sequels to the cheap hit Blair Witch that tried to recapture the magic but also change up the method, the latest sequel essentially sets itself up as a remake.  Remember Heather, the bossy girl from the first film?  Well turns out she had a brother who is rather obsessed with ...you guessed it, going out into the forest and finding out what happened.  So with his techie girlfriend who provides the nifty new cameras for everyone, including the tough friend and his girl too, the foursome are off on the same adventure.

They pick up two others, locals who know all about the legends of the forest, and before you can say 'wait I've seen this before' they're traipsing into the woods.  Things degrade rather quickly.  After one spooky night of noises they wake up to the familiar stick figures display.  They try to leave but go in a circle.  Lots of people start yelling and hollering at each other, then some start disappearing.  There's a really odd distraction with a drone they brought with them.  They send it up to have a look around, but all it can see is trees.  I could have told them that.

Finally the survivors make their way to the infamous house, and then get chased around it by some kind of odd looking stickman type monster.  That's basically it, and since we're watching this film thanks to someone finding a bunch of data tapes, we know from the outset no one gets out alive.  Is it scary?  I guess, but in a cheap way.  It left me thinking, why did I watch this thing?  Did I really care so much about that old one that I wanted to see what happens next?  No, that's not it.  Really, I guess I was looking for a scare, and I remember how terrified I was watching the old one.  But that was a long time ago, and I guess I'm not the same person anymore.  And neither are they.  Two jump scares out of five.

- Peace out
